Mercedes-Maybach Unveils a Stunning New All-Electric Luxury Convertible

Showcased at the 2017 Monterey Car Week in California, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is about five feet longer than most sedans

For anyone who still doesn't believe Tesla is changing the future of automobiles, let this be yet another example. This past weekend, at the 2017 Monterey Car Week in California, Mercedes-Maybach, one of the most luxurious brands on the planet, unveiled the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. The car is a head-turner, as it's 20 feet long (most sedans are roughly 15 feet long) with a body that is more akin to a yacht than it is a traditional car—and that's exactly what the German car manufacturer was aiming for: something that stands out amongst the competition. "The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy," said Gorden Wagener, Daimler AG chief design officer, in a statement. "Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious haute couture interior help to create the ultimate experience."

The concept luxury car has 750 horsepower (more than the 2017 Audi R8 and the 2017 Lamborghini Huracán Spyder) and can go more than 200 miles on a single charge. That's not as impressive a distance as, say, Tesla's Model X P100D (which can go 289 miles), yet it's still a long distance considering the horsepower the car can produce at any given moment.

While the car is only a concept, it shows that even the top luxury brands in the world are taking all-electric vehicle production seriously.

Over the past decade, all-electric vehicles (EVs) have completely disrupted the world of automobiles. Companies such as Hyundai have signaled that, moving forward, EVs are going to be the core of their product strategy. Yet before consumers start lining up for any all-electric Hyundai's, Tesla continues to dominate this sector of the market: Their Model 3 has an estimated demand of over half a million cars.

In the front of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is a set of two suitcases, exclusively created for the vehicle.

The recent Mercedes-Maybach unveiling, however, only means good things for consumers. It signals that even the top luxury brands in the world are fully tuned into the EV revolution. And that means in the very near future, car owners looking for eco-friendly models will be met with a plethora of options to choose from. To date, however, there is no indication if or when the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet would be built and how much it would cost...
