Super Luxury Watches

No doubt the most elite (and most expensive) watch of 2013 was Franck Mueller’s Aeternitas Mega 4. This sporty but elegant timepiece boasts 1,483 components and a 1000-year calendar for the business man and sailor who can’t plan far enough into the future! The watch was presented to an anonymous American collector in Monaco in November for a rumored cost of $2.4m.
So what did he get for his money? The answer is five years of dedicated work by a master watchmaker in Switzerland. Super luxury timepieces like the Aeternitas Megas are collectable and aficionados appreciate their engineering, craftsmanship and performance.
They are also an investment that will increase in value. The Master Watchmakers of Genthod who made the Aeternitas Mega 4 is already taking orders for a second one, which will be available for $2.7 m next year. Meanwhile, here are some other remarkable and collectible watches from 2013 and 2014 that strike up a strong personal signature for discerning guys.
Modern Classic Luxury Watch
The Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane Watch has a clear front where you can see the 18kt white gold pieces working and a nifty part of the escapement which remains upright and parallel no matter which way you swing your wrist. It comes with textured dark brown alligator skin strap and has an overall antique look that is at home with a suit, casuals or travel gear. It is limited to just 25 pieces and costs $280,000.
The Sports Watch
The next super watch was dreamed up for Ferrari drivers to accompany the latest Ferrari at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The strikingly futuristic Hubolt LaFerrari is engineered with 637 components and also features a 50-day power reserve. The face is made from sapphire crystal, shaped to be reminiscent of the sports car’s shape. The case and buckle are crafted from black PVD titanium and the strap is made of rubber. It comes at a cost of $300,000.
The Designer’s Watch
Parmigiani Ovale Pantographe watch was created in cooperation with St Tropez based designer, Parmigiani. It is made from 18kt rose and white gold with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal face, silvered with a ‘barely grain’ design giving it an overall classic contemporary dress watch feel. But it’s the clock hand that sets it apart. Described as ‘telescopic’ the extend and retract as they sweep the oval shaped face. Juxtaposing this sleek innovative design is the old fashion hand-wound function. It consists of 28 jewels and 267 total components and it took a year of testing at the Lausanne institute of technology to achieve perfect accuracy. It’s a great statement watch too for a young design or technology orientated entrepreneur. It comes at a price of around $95,000.
The ‘Bling’ Watch
The decadent Cartier Rotonde Panther has a bold gold granulated image of its signature tiger seemingly etched onto its face. It was actually made by soldering 3,000 tiny balls into place and took 2 months to make. It weighs in at 3.63 carats and was limited to just 20 decadent timepieces. The cost is $260,000.
Superheroes’ Watch
The Breitling Emergency 2 was developed to be both stylish and useful, no doubt the choice of superheroes and here?s why- it has the capability of transmitting a distress signal in digital and analog from virtually anywhere on the globe. It’s made from tough titanium- okay, so maybe it’s not for Superman after all but it’s definitely worth a thought for yachtsmen who traverse the globe. It comes at a retail price of around $18,000.
