Luxury Car Auctions Make Record Sales

Ferrari Testarossa Spider
Car auctions have always been a matter of interest for luxury car aficionados. And, when you check out the list of the most exclusive luxury cars to be sold at an auction, you’ll find an oft repeated name and that is Ferrari. The Ferrari has been and will always be the top luxury car brand. Of all the Ferrari luxury car models, cars from the 250 series are the most sought after. And, why not? The 250 series includes some of Ferrari’s most desirable classics, both road cars and race cars. For example, the Testarossa or The GTO or The California Spider are some of the luxury car brand’s prominent cars that are always in demand.
Just a week ago, an auction at Pebble Beach managed to auction out a California Spider for a whopping eleven million dollars, perhaps making a record of sorts for the particular luxury car model. Gooding & Company sold the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione for a record $11.3 million. Another California Spider was also sold that day – although, it sold at a much lower price of $6.6 million.
At the Pebble Beach auction, another luxury car brand also sold at an astounding $11.8 million. The luxury car brand this time was the Mercedes-Benz and the car was the highly sought-after 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster.
RM Auctions, a Canadian auctioneer meanwhile was also raking up huge sales in the luxury car category in nearby Monterrey. They auctioned about twenty five luxury cars of which twenty of them sold for a million dollars each, while five sold for more than $5 million each. The sales included a classic – the 1968 Ford GT40 complete with Gulf livery which was owned by Steve McQueen. The car, used in the movie “Le Mans”, sold for the huge amount of $11 million. In fact, RM Auctions also sold a 1962 short wheel base model California Spider, but for a modest $8.6 million.
Huge sums of money change hands at high profile luxury car auctions. If you missed these high profile auctions but still aspire to own a classic Ferrari, a 1985 Ferrari Testarossa is for sale in Bellevue, WA. The Testarossa was featured in Miami Vice and gained the reputation of the ultimate supercar, becoming the trendsetter for style and speed. The asking price for this used white-colored petrol supercar is $54,500. Compared to the prices at the car auctions, this sum might appear to be pocket change, but it’s the ultimate luxury car and a classic at that.

  1. Automobile manufacturers market specific makes and models that are targeted at particular socio-economic classes,
and thus "social status came to be associated more with a particular vehicle than ownership of a car per se.
Therefore, automakers differentiate among their product lines in "collusion" with the car-buying public.
While a high price is the most frequent factor, it is "styling, engineering, and even public opinion which
cars had the highest and lowest status associated with them.
Every era in automobile history has had "a group of car marques and models that have been expensive to
purchase, due to their alleged superiority of their design and engineering".[7] Aimed at wealthy buyers,
such automobiles might be generically be termed luxury cars. This term is also used for unique vehicles
produced during "an era when luxury was individualistic consideration, and coachwork could be tailored to

an owner like a bespoke suit. Although there is considerable literature about specific marques, there
is a lack of systematic and scholarly work that "analyzes the luxury car phenomenon itself."[7]
Luxury vehicle makers may either be stand-alone companies in their own right, such as BMW and Mercedes, or
a division/subsidiary of a mass market automaker (e.g., Lexus is part of Toyota). Badge engineering is
often used for cost savings, for example, the Lincoln vehicles that are based on Ford platforms or
Acura models that are modified mass-market Honda cars.[9]
Though widely used, the term luxury is broad and highly variable. It is a perceptual, conditional and
subjective attribute and may be understood differently by different people: "What is a luxury car to
some... may be 'ordinary' to others.
